What
is Matrix High Speed Steel?
The first Matrix High
Speed Steels commercially available in Japan were the
YXR series produced by Hitachi Metals, Japan's leading
producer (by volume) of High Speed Steels. YXR33 (warm
and hot forging tooling), YXR3 (warm and cold forging
tooling) and YXR7 (high strength, high hardness cold
work tooling) were soon followed by Nachi-Fujikoshi's
MDS1, MDS3, MDS7 and Daido Steel's MH85 and MH88.
These steels are all single melted, air melted
steels.
Recently,
Daido Steel introduced the second generation of Matrix
High Speed Steels, dubbed "The Dream Steels".
These steels are double (ESR) melted steels for
improved toughness, fatigue resistance, strength and
cleanliness when compared to the conventionally melted
high speed steels.
DRM1 is for warm and
hot forging tools, DRM2 is for warm and cold forging
tools, and DRM3 is a high hardness (HRC66) high
strength tool steel.
